My granny's parents were full blooded civilized "Indians". We were told Cherokee. Moved from Bowling Green, Kentucky to Indianapolis, Indiana around the turn of the century. Lillie had brothers named Alonzo and Hillmer. When Granny's mother died I received her bells (silver jingle bells sewn on elastic, worn safety pinned around her ankles) and some ribbon she wore on her pigtails. Mom said the Ma Owens was the sweet and gentle and loved her very much, but that she was so dark that she was afraid of her. Ma was darker than Pa. That's about all I know. My family was ashamed to be Native American and we were not allowed to talk about it. If anyone has any information about "Ma & Pa Owens" or where I can find their names, I would really appreciate it.
