Searching by Location, Location,
Location ----------------------------------------------------------------------- To
research a family member thoroughly, it's important to begin by finding out
what records are available for the specific place and time in which your
ancestor lived. At Ancestry.com, location searches allow users to see what's
available on Ancestry.com, and in many cases, where you can go for
follow-ups, and other helpful state-specific information for U.S.
researchers.
Let me walk you through a couple searches. Feel free to
print out this article and join me, it's all on Ancestry.com and, while
accessing most records will require a subscription, it's free to play around
with the searches and get a feel for what's available on the site. We'll use
my Kispert line as an example. I've already found the Kisperts living in
Inyo County, California, in every census from 1870 to 1930. I know that
for a sixty-year time frame, they lived in roughly the same place...

Heroines in
Hoopskirts ----------------------------------------------------------------------- When
we think of the Civil War, we think of our male ancestors trudging off to
war while the women stayed behind waiting for their men to come home. Makes
for a nice romantic tale, but it is usually pretty far from the truth.
While they may have preferred an easier life, when it became necessary women
rose to the challenge and took on traditionally male responsibilities.
Some of them even became soldiers and helped to fight for whichever
side they believed in. Still others took on the dangerous task of spying on
the enemy to try to give their army an advantage. It may surprise you to
learn that there were a number of women spies on both sides of the Civil
War...

Using U.S. Census Mortality
Schedules ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Genealogists
depend more on the U.S. Federal Census population schedules for locating
their ancestors' whereabouts than any other single record type. Despite
the fact that U.S. census enumerations took place over weeks or months,
depending on the decennial year, and the certainty that some transcription
errors were made when the enumerators and other clerical personnel
copied the census schedules, we still place a great deal of emphasis on
the value of the information we find there.
Research into U.S. census
records quickly reveals that there were ...

WWII Memorial
Site ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Megan's
article “Memorial Day Is Everyday” brought to mind a website operated by a
young man named Frank Everads in the Netherlands to honor WWII veterans. I
came in contact with Frank through a WWII chat room that my cousin runs
on AOL, WWII Vets and Friends. Frank was looking for the stories of WWII
veterans to include on his website to honor them and to keep their
memory alive. I sent in my dad's story as well as some of my cousins that
served during WWII to be included on the site, and most of the veterans that
participate in the chat room have sent in theirs as well.
I would
encourage any veteran, or veteran's family member that has their story, to
send them to Frank to include on his site in honor of a fast disappearing
generation of brave men.

U.S. Military
Records ----------------------------------------------------------------------- From
the earliest days of the United States, millions of Americans have served
their country in the military. Indeed, most families have seen one or more
members serve in America's armed forces. For this reason, genealogists
and others wisely look to military records for information needed to enhance
their research. U.S. Military Records describes the records that are
available and where they can be found.
----------------------------------------------------------------------- ==>
Free Census Extraction
Forms ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Census
extraction forms are doubly valuable: not only do they allow researchers to
see the format and column headings for various census years (especially if
the schedules themselves are hard to read), they also provide a clean and
convenient method for extracting and filing important information you
find.
